In this RFC, a large range of options were presented, some of which were not mutually exclusive. This naturally made achieving full consensus challenging. However, based on the overall feedback from editors, some limited, partial consensus can be established.
First, it is evident that there is strong consensus that options 2, 4, 6, 7, and 8 are not preferred by the community. While there was limited support for option 5, this support did not rise to the level necessary to establish (or outright reject) consensus, but it can probably be discounted in further discussions unless new points can be raised.
On the other hand, options 1, 3, and 9 received significant support. These options were consistently favored by the vast majority of editors, however, a full consensus has not been reached on which of these should be the default approach.
The key division among editors lies between whether the default should be 1 or 3, with option 9 reserved for "obvious cases," or whether option 9 (WP:COMMONNAME) should be the default with 1 or 3 applied only when no common name is apparent.
In weighing options 1 and 3, slightly more editors favored option 1, but the discussion was too close to declare a firm consensus as the support for option 3 remains substantial. As such, no consensus has been established on whether option 1 or 3 should be preferred as the default in cases where a style guide approach is used.
Given this lack of resolution between these core options, it may be useful to conduct a follow-up RFC, limiting the focus to just the two specific questions unresolved by this RFC:
- Should WP:COMMONNAME be the default choice, with a style guide used only in the absence of an identifiable common name? Or should a style guide be the default, with common names only overriding it when overwhelmingly used?
- If a style guide is to be applied, should option 1 or option 3 serve as the preferred standard?
