A retronym is a newer name for an existing thing that helps differentiate it from a newer thing that is similar yet not the same. It is used to avoid confusion between the older and newer things; confusion that did not exist before the newer existed.[1][2]
A word introduced because an existing term has become inadequate; "Nobody ever heard of analog clocks until digital clocks became common, so 'analog clock' is a retronym".
